the large intestine

the large intestine

The large intestine, also known as the large bowel or colon, is the last part of the gastrointestinal tract and of the digestive system in vertebrates. Water is absorbed here and the remaining waste material is stored as feces before being removed by defecation.

The major function of the large intestine is to absorb water from the remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body

Your large intestine is the final part of your digestive tract. Undigested food enters. It then reabsorbs water that is used in digestion and eliminates undigested food and fiber. This causes food waste products to harden and form feces, which are then excreted.

  • reabsorption of water and mineral ions such as sodium and chloride.
  • formation and temporary storage of feces.
  • maintaining a resident population of over 500 species of bacteria.
  • bacterial fermentation of indigestible materials.

the small intestine and the liver

the small intestine

the small intestine lies between the stomach and the large intestine colon.

circular inner and longitudinal outer muscles move food along by peristalsis.

A  Villus plural villi covered in microvilli has thin walls and an abundance of capillaries to ensure rapid absorption into the bloodstream.

The small intestine (small bowel) is about 20 feet long and about an inch in diameter. Its job is to absorb most of the nutrients from what we eat and drink. Velvety tissue lines the small intestine, which is divided into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.Image result for the small intestineImage result for the small intestine

the liver

The average mass of human liver 1.5 kg

The liver's main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. As it does so, the liver secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines.

band saw safety

band saw safety

  • Wear safety glasses or goggles,
  • Wear hearing protection on your ears
  • Wear protective footwear when required.
  • Make sure all guards are in place and properly adjusted.
  • Adjust blade guard height to about 3 mm or 1/8 inch
  • Make sure the blade is tracking correctly and runs freely in and against the upper and lower guide rollers.
  • Check the blade is under proper tension.
  • Use band saw blades that are sharp and properly set
  • Hold stock firmly and flat on the table to stop the stock from turning and drawing your fingers against the blade.
  • Use a push stick when you remove cut pieces from between the fence and saw blade or when your hands are close to the blade.
  • Make release cuts before tight curves when doing detailed scroll-type work.
  • Keep the surrounding floor clean and free of obstructions or clutter.

The Digestive Process

The Oesophagus

After you chew food it travels down the oesophagus. Chewed food is called a bolus. Food moves down the osesophagus through a process called peristalsis. Peristalas is when circular muscles contract behind the bolus and longitudinal muscles contract ahead of it. It can move the food/water upwards or downwards. For example, when a giraffe bends over to drink, the process of peristalsis, pushes the water up the oesophagus.

The human stomach

Food travels from the oesophagus to the stomach. The stomach islikea large plastic bag that can hold 2-4 litres. The inside of the stomach is lined with holes called gastric pits. Cells in these pits secrete 3 typres of fluid: hydrochloric acid, pepsin and mucous. When it leaves the stomach food is turned intoa creamy like paste called chyme.

For example, when you eat proteins such as beef or lamb, pepsin in your gastric pits breaks down the proteins into amino acids.
